Supporting industries in Vietnam are growing more than ever when converging at the same time with many conditions such as the presence of global large-scale manufacturers and a strong development of Vietnamese manufacturers and assemblers who have meet global production regulations and standards. Vietnam Business Forum - VCCI had an interview with Mr. Huynh Phong Phu, Local Business Manager, Robotics and Discrete Automation,ABB Vietnam Co., Ltd. in meeting this development demand. Nam Pham reports.

Can you brief ABB Vietnam operation?

ABB in Vietnam ( is part of ABB group ( is a pioneering technology leader in power grids, electrification products, industrial automation and robotics and motion, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally. Continuing a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years with roots in Sweden, ABB today is writing the future of industrial digitalization with two clear value propositions: bringing electricity from any power plant to any plug and automating industries from natural resources to finished products.

ABB’s global operations are organized into five businesses, including Robotics & Discrete Automation.

Can you introduce in details of the concept “Writing the future of flexible manufacturing and smart machines”?

ABB's Robotics & Discrete Automation business provides value-added solutions in robotics, machine and factory automation. Our integrated automation solutions, our application expertise across a wide scope of industries and our global presence deliver tangible customer value. Our focus on innovation includes extensive work in artificial intelligence, an ecosystem of digital partnerships and the expansion of our production and research capabilities through our US$150-million investment in a new world-class robotics factory in Shanghai.

In Vietnam, Robotics Business was established 10 years ago, since then, thousands of robots have been installed in many industries including electronics, automobiles - motorbikes and consumer industries. As the world's leading supplier and the largest number of new robots’ producer in the country, ABB has focused on both human resources and facilities. We have over 30 employees and one technical center in Bac Ninh and the next one will be in Ho Chi Minh City, which aim to bring the fastest response to customer requirements and help them achieve current and future production targets.

Which are main products, market segments and targeted customers of ABB Vietnam?

If ABB's customers were previously international companies, which already knew the benefits of using ABB robots, now the number of Vietnamese customers is increasing by understanding the requirements of ensuring high quality, productivity and stability together with reducing production costs to increase competitiveness in the market.

ABB robot has been applied in many industrial productions with the optimized software and solutions from over 40 years’ experience. Some applications include: picking, packing, pallet loading in consumer, food and beverage industries; Welding, cutting, metal processing in the automotive, motorbike, auxiliary industries, metal products manufacturing in general; Assembly and inspection in electronics industry.

What are your comments on manufacturing industries and supporting industries in Vietnam?

Supporting industries in Vietnam are growing more than ever when converging at the same time with many conditions. The emergence of large-scale manufacturers in the world such as Samsung, LG, Unilever in Vietnam, some of these production facilities are in the heart of the worldwide supply chain. Vietnamese manufacturers and assemblers have also developed to a large scale and complied with production regulations and standards of the world.

These two conditions have promoted the development of the auxiliary manufacturing enterprises. Product requirements and productivity also increased.

Can you share ABB plan for partnering Vietnam’s development towards a more sustainable society?

ABB has recently installed and commissioned over thousands robots in automotive, electronics, animal feed, food and beverage, chemicals, metal and brick fabrication sectors to drive efficiency and quality. ABB will be opening the second robotics center later this year in Ho Chi Minh City to enable faster response nationwide to support its customers to meet manufacturing goals of today and tomorrow.

ABB attaches great importance to promoting education in general and specifically the training of engineers. To this end, ABB in Vietnam has donated its latest technologies to leading engineering universities such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Danang University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, RMIT and Ton Duc Thang University. This equipment brings practical work processes and experience into the learning environment.

In addition, ABB in Vietnam has supported a string of other programs to nurture young talents. The company’s Jürgen Dormann Foundation has awarded scholarships to support talented students with limited financial resources until graduation, as well as donating computers to help them pursue their passion for technology. ABB’s Graduate Engineering Programme (GEP) has employed excellent graduates and given them opportunities to work at ABB in Vietnam and ABB Group’s subsidiaries in other regional countries. ABB’s internship programs, implemented throughout the year, have offered fresh graduates the experience of working in a global company which sets the highest standards for quality, safety, and integrity.

ABB Vietnam will join Vietnam Manufacturing Expo 2019 in Hanoi. What are main products and solutions to be introduced?

At VME exhibition 2019, ABB will show a fully automated production demo, the robots are synchronously controlled by ABB AbilityTM Connected Services, a sophisticated suite of digital services. Being delivered via ABB’s MyRobot, a single, intuitive interface, ABB AbilityTM Connected Services make actionable data available anywhere and at any time to enhance robot uptime and optimize the performance of robotic systems. Customers will also experience the concept of a future and smart manufacturing, which ensures all quality, productivity, price, stability and safety. In addition, we will also simulate a metal process from workpieces, welding, product bearing and finishing.
