Springtime in the NorthwestPosted: Friday, December 30, 2016
The New Year holiday is a leisure time for busy people. They enjoy the atmosphere of family reunion and prepare for a happy springtime after a cold winter. The springtime in the Northwest is so green, the green of budding plants and forests and the blue of spring skies. A new year begins and a new sowing season starts.
Along the roadsides and mountain trails, we can see wild peach trees with dark-mossy branches with sprouting buds - the token of vitality. The traffic to the Northwest is quite easy now because infrastructure has been upgraded. The opening of Hanoi - Lao Cai Highway reduces the travel time to a couple of hours. National Highway 6 connecting Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau provinces is being upgraded. Frontier cities such as Lao Cai, Lai Chau and Dien Bien now have meticulous development plans, modern spaces and beautiful landscapes.
The springtime in the Northwest is colourful with upland market days. Yellowish bamboo shoots or bee honey immediately catches your eyes. Phrynium placentarium - broad leaves used to make traditional chung cakes, or banana leaves used to wrap meat rolls green the market. Black wood ears or dried mushrooms spot the colourful market in addition to batches of white fragrant rice.
Visiting the Northwest in the springtime, you seem to be lost in the distinctive, fascinating cultural domain. You will be enchanted by merry dances in the flickering firelight while you sip aromatic wine. In the last days of lunar year when it is still cold, villages of the Mong, Tay, Dao and Thai peoples keenly prepare for the Tet, or the Lunar New Year. The Mong and Thai peoples celebrate the New Year Festival until the middle of the first month of the lunar year. Every family always excitedly and meticulously prepares for Tet. Most families slaughter pigs to have a delicious celebration after a year of hard work. They may share pigs with each other if they are not wealthy enough or big enough.
Although there is no difference from other years, the colour of the Northwest and the springtime atmosphere of the Northwest still makes your heart grow fonder and gives you a different, strange feeling. Especially, you will have the chance to go to busy markets where upland people go shopping to prepare for the Tet. On this occasion, tourists from far and wide flock to the Northwest to enjoy the spectacular beauty of spring, immerse themselves in the pleasant living space and explore the distinctively nuanced cultures of indigenous peoples.
The Northwest is a mountainous area with its unique characteristics which cannot be seen elsewhere in the country. The appeal of the Northwest tourism has been proven over the years and is always considered a place that cannot be missed for tourists who have passion for liberality and adventure, look for an unspoiled magnificent nature and enjoy experience with cultural originality.
The Northwest is also a poor, remote region whose terrain is rugged and hard to reach. Many places find it hard to develop tourism in particular and the economy and society in general. Therefore, collective actions from the government, the business community, local residents and other stakeholders will determine the tourism development of the Northwest.
