Cambodia, Vietnam Sign Defence Cooperation Deal

Posted: Wednesday, January 11, 2017

The Vietnamese and Cambodian defence ministries inked a cooperation plan for 2017 on January 9.

Cambodia Deputy PM and Defence Minister Tea Banh has begun an official visit to Viet Nam during which he held talks with a high-ranking delegation from Viet Nam’s Ministry of National Defence headed by Minister Ngo Xuan Lich.

At the talks, the two ministers noted that they were pleased with outcomes of bilateral military cooperation last year, particularly in delegation exchanges, personnel training and border security.

Both sides discussed future cooperation focused on delegation exchanges, maintaining the deputy ministerial national defense strategic dialogue, and conducting joint sea patrols.

Two sides agreed to work closely in organising communication campaigns and education activities for mutual understanding as part of celebration of the semi-centenary of the relations between Vietnam and Cambodia.

They also agreed on closer coordination in searching for and repatriating the remains of Vietnamese military experts and volunteer soldiers killed in Cambodia during the war.

The two ministers emphasised that the priorities for defence cooperation this year and in future years would be the organisation of delegation exchanges, deputy ministerial level–defence policy dialogues, joint marine patrols, border work and search for Vietnamese martyrs.

The two sides witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Viet Nam Institute for Military Strategy and the Cambodian Institute for Strategic Studies.
