The National Tourism Year 2017 with the theme of “Northwest Colours” was launched on February 11. During the year, Lao Cai province will host many tourism activities to promote Vietnam’s tourism development into a spearhead economic sector.
The National Tourism Year - Lao Cai - Northwest 2017 engages eight Northwestern provinces, including Lao Cai, Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Phu Tho and Ha Giang. Many other provinces and cities will also respond to the event, including Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Ninh Binh, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Lam Dong, Khanh Hoa, Ho Chi Minh City, Kien Giang and Can Tho.
This is a typical cultural, economic and social event of national and international scale. It is expected to raise the awareness of authorities and the public in tourism development in association with protection of unique tourism resources of the region and in tourism position and role in socioeconomic development of Lao Cai province and other Northwest provinces.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Politburo member and head of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission Nguyen Van Binh, who is also head of the Steering Committee for the Northwestern Region said Lao Cai possesses many advantages, therefore, the Politburo has issued a resolution on developing tourism into a key economic sector over the time ahead and asked local authorities to turn the province into an economic centre for the northern border area.
To prepare for the National Tourism Year 2017, Sa Pa will have many tourism activities and new attractive tourist products in 2017. Accordingly, each season will have a unique thematic festival. During the Spring Festival, incenses will be burnt at Hang Pho Temple, Mau Temple and Thuong Temple. Many activities will be held throughout the festival, including Spring newspaper exhibition, picture galleries, flower festival, cultural activities, entertainment and sporting activities. The springtime will also feature unparalleled traditional festivals like love-matching singing festival in Ta Phin commune, adulthood proclamation festival of the Dao people in Ban Khoang commune, dancing festival of the Tay people in Ban Ho commune, Gau Tao festival of the Mong people in San Sa Ho commune, and field-visiting festival of Tay people in Ta Van commune.
Sa Pa will set off fireworks at the opening ceremony of Summer Festival 2017. Many festivals will be held throughout this major festival, including festival on clouds, cultural days in Mong Cat Cat village, panpipe and flute performance festival of the Mong people, flower festival and gastronomic festival.
In the autumn time, notable tourism products include a full moon eve programme, a terrace discovery programme in Muong Hoa Valley, a new rice ritual, Sa Pa International Mountain Marathon 2017, a photo contest themed and “love stories in Sa Pa”. In the winter time, Sa Pa will host a ceremony to welcome the New Year 2018 with many meaningful activities such as a road festival performing costumes of six ethnic groups in Sa Pa, a snow discovery programme and other arts and sporting activities.
In 2017, Lao Cai province will organise many distinguished cultural, tourism and sports activities such as a workshop on Vietnam - China tourism development cooperation, Sa Pa International Mountain Marathon - VMM 2017, and a horse race in Bac Ha Plateau.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will direct or coordinate with central authorities to respond to the National Tourism Year 2017, including Vietnam - China - Laos - Cambodia Culture, Sports and Tourism Festival; Vietnam Tourism Village Festival; a cookery contest named “Golden Spoon - Taste of Northwest”; Vietnam - Laos Border Culture, Sports and Tourism Exchange Festival; and Vietnam - China Border Tourism Development Cooperation Exchange.
In addition, Lao Cai province will invest to create new unique tourism products like upgrading community tourist attractions, creating new tourism products in connection with cultural heritage of Lao Cai terraces, launching market days, spiritual tourism programme along the Red River, building Northwest flower-based tourism products, and developing mountain-climbing tourism products.
Mr Ha Van Thang, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lao Cai province, said that in 2017, Lao Cai aims to welcome 4 million visitors, including 1 million international tourists.
