Raising Enterprises’ Roles in Sustainable Development

Posted: Monday, March 27, 2017

“Raising enterprises’ roles in sustainable development” is the confirmation of President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and new Chairman of the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD) Vu Tien Loc at the third-term VBCSD Congress. Mr Mark Wilson, Heineken's Corporate Relations Director, is the co-chairman of VBCSD.
Speaking at the Congress, Dr Loc highly valued the success of the Council in the second term. The Council has made important contributions to sustainable development movements through diverse activities. VBCSD has created forums for Vietnamese businesses to learn, share information, knowledge, and expand opportunities for business investment.

He added that sustainable development is an important and vital requirement of economic development in every country. In Vietnam, after a series of recent environmental incidents, sustainable development is a mandatory requirement for every business. Particularly, at the forthcoming APEC Economic Leaders’ Summit and APEC CEO Summit, sustainable development is also a cross-cutting issue that very much interests delegates.

Placing emphasis on roles of VBCSD in general and of businesses in particular in implementation of the Government Resolution 19, Dr Loc affirmed that the Council has actively participated in drafting and enforcing Resolution 19. At the same time, the Council has made important contributions in the national action plan on green growth. These efforts have been recognised by the business community and the Government. At the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI) announcement ceremony, sustainable development is also called to action.

VBCSD Secretary General Nguyen Quang Vinh said that VBCSD has carried out very concrete actions and brought practical benefits to the Vietnamese business community. Specifically, in policy lobbying and drafting, the Council has actively engaged in Resolution 19 on improving business environment and enhancing national competitiveness, the national action plan on green growth, the national action plan on implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, recommendations for energy efficiency and climate change mitigation, and recommendations for promoting sustainable reporting.

In addition, the Annual Corporate Sustainability Forum has become a VBCSD brand. This is one of the largest annual corporate sustainability forums in Vietnam, a widely recognised playground for businesses and stakeholders to discuss and exchange experiences on good practices as well as sustainable development solutions and support public-private dialogue to increase Government supports for corporate sustainability.

Initiated in 2014, the Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI) was officially launched in 2016 and has been updated annually. The Programme for Benchmarking and Ranking Sustainable Businesses in Vietnam was also held for the first time in Vietnam and will become an annual event to attract more than 400 enterprises nationwide. VBCSD has also launched many activities to uphold corporate social responsibility in the fisheries sector, Blue Number Initiative, and inclusive business development model.
In the current term, VBCSD will focus on four main objectives: (1) national action programme for Agenda 2030 for sustainable development; (2) Resolution 19 on improving business environment and enhancing national competitiveness; (3) Resolution 35 on business support and development to 2020; and (4) action plan for execution of the Paris Climate Change Agreement of Vietnam. Its operations will still meet key requirements: Meeting members’ needs and aspirations.

The Council will continue to promote such activities as membership development, membership interaction; membership commitment level and secretariat capacity to bring the best performances, affirmed Secretary General Nguyen Quang Vinh.
