Doosan Vina - Leader of Quang Ngai Heavy IndustriesPosted: Saturday, April 15, 2017
To realise the goal of becoming a modern industrial province soon, Quang Ngai has exerted every effort on developing a comprehensive and healthy industrial sector. In particular, heavy industry is considered a key drive to economic growth and export growth of the province. Doosan Heavy Industries Viet Nam Co., Ltd (Doosan Vina) has emerged as a pioneer in manufacturing and exporting heavy industrial equipment in Quang Ngai province, known as the land of An Mountain and Tra River. The following interview with Mr Yeon In Jung, CEO of Doosan Vina, will partly illustrate the role and importance of Doosan Group in general and Doosan Vina in particular to the development of Quang Ngai industry in general and its heavy industry in particular. Hoang Lam reports.
As one of prominent and influential foreign direct investment (FDI) companies in Quang Ngai province, Doosan Vina has made tremendous and important contributions to the province’s industrialisation and modernisation. What are key activities that you would call the pride of Doosan Vina?
We celebrated the 10th anniversary of Doosan Vina in November 2016. Since we started operations, we have been working hard to be one of the most powerful businesses that both Vietnam and the community feel proud of when they talk about Doosan Vina. One of our advantages lies in our skilful workforce comprised of experienced, passionate and creative engineers, designers and technicians who shine our name globally. To date, Doosan Vina has become the “common roof” of nearly 2,100 Vietnamese employees working who have many billion-dollar products for the market.
Since it went into operation in 2009, Doosan Vina has exported more than US$1.21 billion worth of products to more than 28 countries and territories worldwide, including US$200 million in 2016. A total of 349,584 tonnes of made-in-Vietnam heavy equipment has been exported, including nearly 22,000 tonnes in 2016.
Main made-in-Vietnam products manufactured by Doosan Vina include boilers for thermal power plants, desalination equipment, container handling gantry cranes, chemical processing equipment, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) and steel structures which have been exported to 28 countries and territories around the world. Wherever you are, from the Middle East, Europe and Asia to South America, the United States, Canada or Australia, you can find Doosan Vina's products of global quality standard shipped from its specialised ports to every customer around the world.
In Vietnam, Doosan Vina has been fabricating and supplying equipment to four thermal power plants. Once completed and put into operation, these plants will contribute a total capacity of 4,120 MW to the national grid (1,200 MW in Vinh Tan 4 Thermal Power Plant, 600 MW in Expanded Vinh Tan 4 Thermal Power Plant, 1,200 MW in Song Hau Power Plant and 1,120 MW in Mong Duong 2 Power Plant). Around the world, Doosan Vina has provided equipment for various power projects with a combined capacity of 11,180 MW, about three times as much as in the domestic market.
As for loading and unloading equipment, Doosan Vina has provided giant container handling gantry cranes for Da Nang Port, Saigon Port as well as the world's leading ports such as Singapore's PSA Port, India’s JNPT Port and many others. To date, we have exported 65 modern gantry cranes all over the world.
Another core product of Doosan Vina is desalination equipment. Our 4,500-tonne seawater desalination equipment is currently generating nearly 1 billion litres of clean water in the Middle East for people to live well in the dry season and grow food crops without having to worry about water supply.
Doosan Vina's products always satisfy partners and customers and gain their appreciation. Without doubt, behind this success is a well-prepared, systematic, scientific investment strategy, particularly in quality policy?
Doosan Vina stands behind the company name and the company brand! We are committed to meeting customers beyond their expectations. At the same time, we create a safe working environment and try to minimise impact incidents for employees.
10 years of operations in the light of prestige and quality credo, Doosan Vina’s products are known for quality, safe operation, durability and performance. In order to provide customers with assurance, we have been accredited for quality assurance by the world-leading engineering, manufacturing, safety and management system organisations such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the certification agency DET NORSKE VERITAX (DNV), the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO).
As I mentioned above, we now have customers across the world who are engaged in different industries, including industry leaders. They believe in Doosan Vina because we will be their product lifetime partners, starting from designing to production, delivery and after-sales service. We provide regular and reliable after-sales services as per the contract and product life cycle. This is also a way that Doosan Vina has gained scores in the eyes of partners and customers.
Doosan Vina and its parent company Doosan Group have invested heavily in research, development, training and technology transfer to ensure that our products have the most advanced technology and lead in heavy industry.
Not only actively contributing to the international economic integration of Quang Ngai province, Doosan Vina has also actively taken part in charity and social welfare in the province and called the leader in corporate social responsibility (CSR) by Chairman of Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee Tran Ngoc Cang. Would you be kind enough to tell us more about this very humanistic business culture of Doosan Vina?
In addition to focusing on business, Doosan Vina has invested much in CSR programmes in an attempt to build a healthy community. Since it started operations in Quang Ngai province, Doosan Vina has invested more than US$6.7 million in CSR programmes. Our CSR programme focuses on three main areas (education, healthcare and housing) because we think they are three main platforms for a healthier and more sustainable community. This is also the reason why Doosan Vina has been placing its resources and personnel into these activities.
To date, Doosan Vina has cooperated with Chung Ang University Hospital to provide free medical checks, treatments and medicines to more than 16,000 people; donated over 2.6 doses of multivitamins to malnourished children; awarded scholarships worth more than US$250,000 in total; built and repaired 27 houses for local people, childless elderly and its employees; funded US$1 million worth of seawater filtration equipment to people on Ly Son Island; and trained and funded the national archery team together with a variety of charity programmes.
With many diversified and effective CSR programmes, Doosan Vina has been honoured a lot of CSR awards such as the CSR Awards by the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Economic Knowledge (October 27, 2011); CSR Award by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea (December 4, 2014); the certificate of recognition of company with an excellent CSR in the province (September 9, 2016); and CSR Awards for Korean Enterprises (November 30, 2012), among others.
What do you think about the investment environment in Quang Ngai province in particular and in Vietnam at large?
The investment climate in Quang Ngai is now “heating up” with cooperation agreements aimed at attracting more and more multinational companies seeking opportunities to expand their production and business activities in Vietnam.
I myself find that Vietnam has many favourable conditions to draw investment flows, including its favourable location, easy access to markets all over the world, rich and diverse resources, abundant human resources, political stability, and attractive investment incentive policies. So, I always think that the road ahead of Vietnam is a promising future. And, Doosan Vina is proud to support Quang Ngai province in particular and Vietnam in general on the path to that bright future.
Given its large operating scale and outstanding high growth, can you describe Doosan Vina's vision of reaching the international level?
Doosan Vina's development plan will be driven by world economic trends and we are still working to find out hidden makings. It is certain that Doosan Vina is still developing and it is too soon to discuss a specific plan, but I am sure that Doosan Vina is laying the foundation for the purpose of supplying power and water demands and gantry cranes for the world in the next decade.
