Mind and Power of Vietnamese Women Increasingly Affirmed

Posted: Wednesday, April 26, 2017

The 27th Global Summit of Women (GSW) is set to take place from May 11 to 13, 2017 in Japan. On this occasion, Vietnam Business Forum has an interview with Vice State President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, head of the Vietnamese delegation to the GSW. Le Hien reports.

Vietnam has been an active participant at the Global Summit of Women for many years. As a representative of the State of Vietnam and a Vietnamese woman, what message would you send to the international community?
The Global Summit of Women is a premier international forum for women globally, established in the 1990s and rotated annually by its members to promote women’s participation and contribution in socioeconomic life of each nation as well as the entire world, especially in business field. This year, the summit will take place in Tokyo, Japan with many useful programmes and information for female leaders and the women-led business community. After many years of active participation in this summit, we would like to deliver a message to the international community that Vietnamese women are always confident and active in integrating and participating in economic and social development for the nation, for the family and for their own. Many women-led corporations are successful not only in Vietnam but also in the world, for example, Vinamilk, TH True Milk, BRG and VietJet.

Could you tell us the main agenda of this summit?
As far as I am concerned, the GSW Agenda includes Ministerial Roundtable: Doing Business with Japan and some breakout sessions such as Global and Regional Economic Megatrends; Leadership Development Track: Building Your Brand Internally and Externally; Women CEO Forum: Accelerating Women’s Corporate Leadership; Entrepreneurial Track: Stepping from the Brink: Recovering from Business Setbacks; Equalising the Pay Gap: Best Practices; Accelerating Stem for Successful 21st Century Careers; and Reaching Women Effectively as a Market. Besides, there are special sessions that interest women like Business of Fashion and Design; Building Collaboration with Men; and Building Your East-West Cultural Competence.

What is your expectation for business connectivity, trade & investment promotion with Japanese partners through this event? What activities will the Vietnamese delegation take part in during this event?
The Vietnamese delegation is comprised of 50 companies, mainly led by women, attending the 2017 Global Summit of Women. Many are doing business with Japan in various industries. Moreover, Japan has a closely relationship with Vietnam in many fields like economy, commerce and diplomacy. The bilateral relationship is reportedly best since the two countries founded diplomatic relations 45 years. Most recently, in early March 2017, the Japanese Emperor and Empress paid a state visit to Vietnam, marking a historic milestone in the two countries' friendship and cooperation.

In the economic sphere, Japan continues to be Vietnam's top economic partner, the second largest foreign investor in Vietnam, the fourth largest trading partner of Vietnam and the third largest tourism partner. By the end of 2016, Japan had more than 3,200 valid investment projects with a total registered investment of over US$42 billion in Vietnam, accounting for 15 per cent of total FDI in the country. The two-way trade value reached nearly US$30 billion 2016 and the two sides have pledged to double it by 2020. In addition, Japan is the largest official development assistance (ODA) donor for Vietnam. Many Japanese projects have been completed and put into very effective operation, thus contributing greatly to Vietnam’s socioeconomic development.

In addition to participating in official issues, the Vietnam business delegation has two Vietnamese - Japanese business forums organised by VCCI and representatives from the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development jointly held in Tokyo and Fukuoka Prefecture. Apart from meeting with Japanese conglomerates and Chikushino high-tech agricultural zone, I expect this event will attract more investment and trade capital and reaffirm the deep strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan. Participating companies of Vietnam will have a good opportunity to develop business cooperation and access the Japanese market to expand and increase their business efficiency.

In previous summits, the Vietnamese delegation actively discussed many issues confronting women in an open world. Could you please share your feelings about the integration of Vietnamese women?
By watching previous GSWs and directly attending the event this year, I find that women around the world have increasingly asserted their role and position in building a stable, sustainable society. For its part, Vietnam has sent high-level delegations to previous GSWs and delivered speeches there. Our delegation members actively discussed the role of women in integration period, particularly in economic and social integration in the country and in the world. I feel that Vietnamese women are quite confident and active in integration, evidenced in a growing ratio of women in economic and social activities, their efforts to study, exchange and cooperate to raise knowledge, accumulate experience and take action. They know how to control pressures and challenges in life and career. In addition, they know how to relieve pressures on family affairs to ensure harmony and balance of career and family affairs, pay more attention to the community and reap more success. Last but not least, they have passed on the enthusiasm and passion to the offspring, continued to promote traditional trades and working experience that they undertake. However, frankly, these examples are too little to the Vietnamese women workforce, which accounts for over 50 per cent of the population.
