GSW: Opportunity for Businesswomen to Connect, Find Partners

Posted: Wednesday, May 10, 2017

The 2017 Global Summit of Women will be held in Tokyo, Japan from May 11 to 13, 2017 under the theme “Beyond Womenomics: Accelerating Access”, a useful and innovative forum aimed to empower women and to engage more women in economic development in every nation and in the entire world.

Vietnam Business Forum has an exclusive interview with Madam Nguyen Thi Tuyet Minh, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Women Entrepreneurs Council (VWEC), prior to her trip to Japan for the 2017 Global Summit of Women.

Given your experience with the Global Summits of Women, how do you assess the contributions of the Vietnamese business delegation to the summit?

Under the direction and guidance of Party and State leaders and the Vice State President, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) has assigned the Vietnam Women Entrepreneurs Council (VWEC) to organise a business delegation accompanying the Vice State President to attend the Global Summit of Women (GSW). Vietnam attends GSW every year and stands among the five largest delegations to the GSW. Some business leaders in the delegation have been invited to be speakers at GSW and shared Vietnam's experience in empowering women's participation in building a sustainable economy, increasing women’s presence in leadership positions, and preferential policies for female workers. Vietnamese businesswomen have actively discussed women’s contributions in business and shared challenges faced by businesswomen in business start-up, development and expansion as well as experience to overcome hardships as well as balance business and personal life. This year, Madam Thai Huong, President of TH Group, will deliver a speech to the summit titled “Overcoming challenges - Corporate restructuring” on the afternoon of May 12.

In addition, in recent years, the Vietnamese delegation has actively brought products to showcase and sell at the incorporated exhibition. This year, the delegation will have three booths for the members to introduce their products. This is also the first time Vietnam has the most booths at the event.

Could you please introduce the composition of the Vietnamese business delegation to the GSW this year?

The Vietnamese delegation is attended by companies across the country. Attendees are typical businesses who want to learn and share know-how and want to seek business partners, investment opportunities or potential business activities that interest Japanese companies. Participating companies are engaged in hi-tech agricultural production and processing; food production and processing (cake, candy, tea, etc.); production and outsourcing of garment and textile and leather and footwear for export; medical equipment import and export; delivery of health care and beauty services; pharmaceutical production and trading; industrial waste recycling; supporting industries; and others.

Reportedly, VCCI has directed VWEC to organise some activities in order to seek opportunities of business and investment cooperation with Japan. Would you talk about these activities?

This year, the business delegation not only accompanies the Vice President to attend the GSW in Japan but some are also allowed to escort her to Mongolia. VWEC has asked for permission to organise three events at the GSW and been approved by the Vice President. The programmes include Vietnam - Mongolia Business Meeting in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; Vietnam - Japan Business Meeting in Tokyo, Japan; and Vietnam - Kyushu Business Meeting in Fukuoka, Japan.

Upon the request of a delegation member, the Vietnam Women Entrepreneurs Council has reported to and been approved by the Vice President to receive NOSUID Group and some major Japanese corporations at the GSW. In addition, the delegation will host bilateral exchanges with delegations in ASEAN and APEC countries to seek cooperation opportunities and invite them to attend the APEC Women Entrepreneurs Forum later this year in Vietnam.

What experiences have Vietnamese women entrepreneurs gained from the GSWs?

After each summit, businesswomen learn more valuable lessons, gain more confidence in proving their status in economy and society and address regional and international issues. By attending related conferences, the VWEC and its members have established networks with the world-leading women's companies and women-run businesses across the globe.
