Key Market for Vietnam Tourism

Posted: Tuesday, June 20, 2017

In the Vietnam Tourism Development Strategy in 2011-2020, with a vision to 2030, South Korea is considered a key market that Vietnam needs to focus on because Korean tourists are high spenders.

According to data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), among more than 10 million foreign visitors in 2016, Korean tourists accounted for nearly 1.55 million, an increase of 37.8 per cent from a year earlier, ranking second amongst foreign tourist arrivals to Vietnam, only after China.

Korean tourists tend to opt for “two countries, one destination” option. High-income travellers often choose high-quality, expensive tours. Meanwhile, some prefer visiting Vietnam and then travelling to Laos or Cambodia by land to explore scenic landscapes and leisure at an average cost. Korean youths tend to travel freely to enjoy the diversity of cultures, rather than go with travel agencies. Ha Long City and Ho Chi Minh City are popular destinations for Korean visitors because of affordable budgets and attractive attractions.

Mr Ha Van Sieu, Director of the Vietnam Institute for Tourism Development Research (ITDR), said that Korean people go on holiday throughout the year but more in January, July and August. Vietnamese tourism products offered to Koreans are usually scenic destinations with historical, cultural and natural values; recreational facilities and shopping and healthcare options.

Underlying the special attention to the Korean market, at the 32nd Korea World Travel Fair, held from June 1 - 6, Mr Dinh Ngoc Duc, Director of Tourism Market Department under the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), said that the Government and VNAT were strongly commited to investing in more resources and adopting more favourable policies to attract more Korean visitors at the fair. The VNAT tourism promotion delegation also introduced to Korean partners four major tourism products, including marine tourism, ecological tourism, cultural tourism and city tourism.

Mr Dinh Ngoc Duc forecast that Korean tourist arrivals to Vietnam will rise 40 per cent to 2 million visitors.

To attract Korean visitors to Vietnam, VNAT will coordinate with relevant bodies to build tourism products and services for each market segment, with a focus on their tastes; and build professional informative websites in Korean language to boost online promotion and advertisement.

In addition to organising annual cultural and tourism events in Korea, the tourism sector will survey and collect market information to support promotion planning in Vietnam and in Korea. Besides, to improve the service quality, the tourism industry will develop and improve the quality of tourism human resources serving Koreans; establish and operate the Korean Business Club; and inspect and rectify tourist reception and service activities for Koreans.

While Vietnam and Korea are actively preparing to celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations (December 22, 1992 - 2017), given fine bilateral relations, convenient air traffic connections and the visa waiver for Korean visitors, arrivals to Vietnam from Korea will further increase in the coming time.
