4G Subscribers Boom in Vietnam

Posted: Tuesday, August 15, 2017

2017 is considered a 4G LTE boom in Vietnam as three big operators, VNPT, Mobifone and Viettel, got licensed by the Ministry of Information and Communications to establish public telecommunication networks and provide 4G telecommunication services. The 4G race has officially exploded this year, promising a strong rivalry among operators to bring consumers high-speed, best quality 4G LTE experiences to customers.

This information was released at the 4G LTE International Symposium and Exhibition on “4G LTE service diversification towards enhancing efficiency of consumer satisfaction” jointly held by the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Vietnam Internet Association and International Data Group (IDG).

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Hong Hai said that 2017 is a good time to vigorously deploy 4G networks in Vietnam, enabling the booming development of 4G services. Being aware that the 4G LTE development plays an important role in the digital era, the Ministry of Information and Communications planned to allow telecom firms in Vietnam to test next-generation mobile technology, 4G, as early as 2010.

4G deployment is an important turning point for Vietnam's telecom market, he said. With connectivity speed and increased data access, traditional internet services will be quickly changed to meet user needs anytime, anywhere. A number of other services or applications will be developed such as IoT services and SmartCity applications.

According to reports from network operators, as many as 43,000 4G transmission stations have been installed nationwide, covering about 95 per cent of the population. According to experts, the 4G coverage has spread very fast in a short time.

VNPT has installed 4G stations in many localities to prepare for the nationwide coverage in 2017 right after it embarked. According to the plan, this year, VNPT will officially operate 15,000 4G base stations, covering key areas in all 63 provinces across the country. Meanwhile, Viettel launched 4G LTE services nationwide using 4T4R technology in April and deployed 36,000 base stations covering 95 per cent of the population. MobiFone has built 4,500 4G LTE stations and planned to have 30,000 4G stations from 2017 to 2018.

According to 4G LTE user behaviour survey data in Vietnam by IDG, 29 per cent of users use 4G for their business affairs (payment, trade, advertising and conference) and 56 per cent use it for entertainments (social networking, movies, television, music, games).

According to experts, the robust deployment of 4G LTE will facilitate the development of value-added services based on the 4G platform to satisfy customer expectations and enhance customer experiences in using such services as digital content, IoT, television, audio, e-commerce, social networking and smart-city development application.

Not only that, the 4G deployment will be a leverage for Vietnam to enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The successful deployment of 4G and then 5G will help Vietnam catch up with the Fourth Industrial Revolution as telecom roles must ensure network connectivity, high-speed connectivity and continuity.

By the same token, Mr Thieu Phuong Nam, General Director of Qualcomm Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, said that 4G LTE has been, and will be, helping Vietnam to improve information technology infrastructure, bring broadband internet access to people and businesses, and complete national programmes on e-government, smart city and smart agriculture.

However, to carry out regulations on value-added services imposed by the Ministry of Information and Communications to ensure right interests of consumers, Vietnamese telecom firms are forced to improve service quality and customer care while changing the way of doing business, according to experts.

Furthermore, network operators are faced with a number of considerable challenges relating to technical infrastructure such as technical network upgrading, high-speed connectivity, traffic efficiency administration, subscriber management software improvement, 4G-compatible terminal development and information security on 4G LTE networks.

Held in parallel with the symposium, a talk on strategy and information technology solutions for full utilisation of 4G LTE networks in Vietnam was attended by officials from the Authority of Radio Frequency Management and the Telecommunications Authority under the Ministry of Information and Communications, Qualcomm Group, Viettel and VNNIC. Topics focused on trends and solutions to improve telecommunications infrastructure in Vietnam, optimal security trends and solutions for 4G LTE networks, and practical experience sharing.

In addition to the symposium was the Exhibition on 4G LTE Technology 2017, showcasing technologically advanced products from FPT Telecom, Mobifone, VTV Digital, CMC Telecom, Huawei, GMO-Z.com RUNSYSTEM, PA Vietnam, Avnet and Netnam. The exhibition continued to be the convergence of the latest and most innovative IT products and technologies from world-leading technology groups and a place where the truest experience and vision of 4G LTE was showcased.
