Enhancing Cooperative Performance

Posted: Friday, August 25, 2017

The Ministry of Planning and Investment recently hosted a workshop on international experience sharing for building effective cooperative models in value chains. The event attracted the participation of domestic and foreign specialists and cooperative representatives.

Vietnam has over 19,500 cooperatives, mainly engaged in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, transport, credit and handicraft. However, after a long period of development, just a small percentage of cooperatives are operating effectively or developing more strongly than their peers in the process of international integration. At present, only a third of above-mentioned units are operating well. Over 2,600 cooperatives were dissolved.

Some attending experts said cooperatives need to learn and study some successful cooperative models in developed countries such as Canada, the Netherlands and Germany. In particular, cooperatives are built on a voluntary basis, pool resources from members, and share profits on agreement or contribution. Voluntary spirit is the root of sustainable development.
