Vietnam, Taiwan (China) Upgrading Industrial Cooperation

Posted: Tuesday, August 29, 2017

At VCCI Headquarters, VCCI President Vu Tien Loc recently met and worked with a delegation of 13 Taiwanese businesses led by Mr Cheng Tien Chan, Chairman of the Taiwan Textile Federation and Permanent Member of the Chinese National Federation of Industries. Mr Cheng Tien Chan also invited the host to attend the Vietnam-Taiwan Industrial Cooperation Conference 2017, expected to take place in Ho Chi Minh City.

The guest said that, in early 2016, Taiwan's new administration launched the New Southbound Policy which focuses on economic development cooperation objectives with Southeast Asia, because this region has many incentives, a favourable geographic location, abundant young workforce, low labour cost, and especially cultural similarities. Therefore, the Taiwanese government wishes to build up an extended business chain in production, manufacturing and garment industries.

Mr Cheng Tien Chan said that the Chinese National Federation of Industries is the largest economic unit in Taiwan with 159 members. It is also seen as a bridge for its members to promote their commercial activities not only in Taiwan but also abroad. The business community and the Government of Taiwan hope that the high-level forum will be a place for Vietnamese and Taiwanese companies to share, form, and consolidate connectivity. Taiwan expected to invite 250 Taiwanese and Vietnamese businesses as well as representatives from government agencies and academics from the two countries to attend the event.

President Vu Tien Loc emphasised that not only should high-level meetings be held successfully but also there is a need for establishing a mechanism for information and business cooperation promotion for the two sides. It is important that follow-up activities must be definitely implemented well.

In the world, Taiwan's industrialisation model is judged as successful, as one of the Asian dragons. According to Mr Cheng Tien Chan, one of Vietnam-Taiwan strategic partnerships is the textile and garment industry. Vietnam has become the world's third largest apparel exporter.
