Turning Tourism into Key Economic Sector

Posted: Tuesday, September 19, 2017

The tourism resources of Bac Kan province are diverse, with plenty of scenic spots, caves, and historical and cultural relics, for example, Ba Be National Park, Cho Don Wartime Safety Area, Nang Tien Cave, Nam Xuan Lac Nature Reserve and Kim Hy Nature Reserve. At present, Bac Kan province has 432 intangible cultural heritages, with eleven ranked as national values.

Mr Ha Van Truong, Director of the Bac Kan Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that Bac Kan is well-known for its potential for tourism development. However, over the years, Bac Kan tourism still faces many difficulties due to unfavourable traffic conditions, poor tourism products, unprofessional tourism service development, short tourist stays, and low tourism revenue. In 2016, Bac Kan welcomed 400,000 visitors, 11.1 percent higher than a year earlier, and earned VND280 billion, up 11.1 per cent year on year. The room occupancy rate was 40.5 per cent. Nevertheless, these growth rates were incommensurate with local tourism potential.

To fully tap local tourism potential and strengths, Bac Kan province has focused on strengthening tourism development planning and implementation. In the Bac Kan tourism development master plan to 2025, with a vision to 2030, the province aims to turn tourism into an important economic sector from 2020 to 2025, to lay the groundwork for it to become a key economic sector by 2030, which will account for 8-10 per cent of GDP. Bac Kan hopes to attract 17,000 international visitors and 600,000 domestic visitors, earn VND725 billion of total revenue and have 13,800 tourism workers by 2020. By 2030, the province will welcome more than 50,000 international visitors and 1.5 million domestic visitors, make VND4,200 billion of tourism revenue and generate jobs for 27,000 tourism workers.

Based on tourism planning and local strengths, the province sought out new ways of developing tourism like homestay, which is primarily available at Ba Be Lake and Ba Be National Park with Pac Ngoi, Coc Toc and Bo Lu mountain villages. Local people who live on tourism join with others to form singing clubs to serve tourists. In addition to unlocking tourism potential, Bac Kan seeks to add human tourism potential from the community, entertainment services, convalescence and cultural experiences.

Besides, Bac Kan has focused on promoting tourism investment and advertising local tourism potential at some investment attraction conferences, carried out with other localities with developed tourism like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, to lure tourism companies there to invest in Bac Kan. Currently, Saigontourist Corporation has cooperated with Bac Kan province to invest in Environmental Education and Forest Environmental Services Centre at Ba Be National Park. Moreover, the Bac Kan Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has actively coordinated with its peers in Thai Nguyen and Cao Bang provinces, and Hanoi Tourism Association, to organise tour survey programmes, historical tours and ecological tours along National Highway 3 (Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Bac Kan - Cao Bang) to best facilitate travel firms to tap tourism potential in the three localities, particularly Bac Kan province.
