Vietnam has exported its first batch of dragon fruits to Australia after nine years of negotiation, the third type of fruit Vietnam has exported to this market after lychee and mango, the Vietnamese government said Monday.

The fruits shipped from Long An-based Hoang Phat Co. are now sold at fruit markets in Melbourne and Sydney, the government said in a statement.

Vietnam has the largest dragon fruit farming area in Asia with total cultivation area estimated at over 25,000 hectares and annual output of 460,000 metric tons. The fruit is grown mostly in central and southern provinces.

Vietnam has been seeking to improve its fruit and vegetable quality by applying strict and modern farming and preserving techniques with an aim of penetrating foreign markets. Data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs show that the country earned $2.35 billion from fruit and vegetable exports in the first eight months of this year, up from $528 million in the same period last year.
