Russia - Key Tourism Market of Vietnam

Posted: Wednesday, October 04, 2017

Vietnam welcomed nearly 385,000 Russian tourists in the first eight months of 2017, up 45 per cent year on year, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT). Russia has actually been an important tourism market of Vietnam.

Boosting tourism promotion in Russia
Russia had a population of 144 million as of 2016, of which 73 per cent lived in urban areas. Russians are very open and, particularly quite close to the Vietnamese. They usually go on holiday to escape the very cold winter. They often use high-end services, buy souvenirs and spend much.

Therefore, Russia has been a key tourism market for Vietnam. Tourism promotion in this market is necessary and urgent.

Mr Ngo Duc Manh, Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, said, “To attract Russian tourists, we need to step up promotions and participation in tourism fairs and forums.”

To do so, Vietnam and Russia have many cooperation programmes in the past year like signing the Tourism Cooperation Agreement (November 19, 1997); granting Russian visitors visa-free 15-day stays; training Russian-speaking tourist guides; and organising tourism fairs and exhibitions on Vietnamese tourism in major Russian cities such as the “Vietnam Street Food Festival” in Moscow.

Mr Alexander Basov, Chairman of the Russian Travel Association, also praised Vietnam’s tourism potential for Russian tourists and wished to promote cooperation ties between the two countries. He reaffirmed his supports for Vietnam in building up tourism cooperation and pledged to do everything possible to make more Russians access this potential market.

On the other hand, the Vietnam Tourism Association has also supported the Federal Agency for Tourism of the Russian Federation to organise tourism promotion activities in Vietnam to introduce Russian tourism to Vietnamese people.

In addition, the Vietnam Tourism Association signed commitments with some localities such as Phu Yen, Binh Dinh and travel agencies in Vietnam to reserve preferential programmes for Russian tourists such as discounts, airline tickets and value-added services. Domestic travel agencies also actively improve foreign language skills, especially Russian, for local guides. Vietnam and Russia now have daily direct flights.

Good signs
Ms Maya Lomidze, Executive Director of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, said, “Russians have given priority to choosing Asian beaches as resort destinations in recent years. And, Vietnam has a strong foothold in tour sales in Southeast Asia.”

China and Russia are the two fastest growing tourism markets for Vietnam. While China has favourable geographical proximity, Russian tourists are exempt from tourist visa. Apart from natural, cultural and historical values, Vietnam is an inexpensive tourist destination in the region. Therefore, even when the Russian economy slowed down, Russian tourists to Vietnam are still steadily rising.

Especially, in early September, 2017, about 500 people from hundreds of travel agents of Pegas Touristik Company across Russia came to survey tourism in Vietnam to prepare products for Russian tourists during the new season.

They surveyed services, restaurants, hotels, places of interest and cuisines in many localities, such as Khanh Hoa, Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan and Ho Chi Minh City to start new programmes for Russian tourists in the new season, starting from October this year until April next year.

Ms Maya Lomidze predicted that “Russian tourist arrivals to Vietnam may reach 700,000 in 2017." Meanwhile, Ms Yulia Mitrofanova from Focus Travel estimated at one million visitors.

With efforts from tourism authorities and tourism businesses plus good signs above, Russian tourists to Vietnam will increase strongly in the coming time. Vietnam is confident that it will become one of the most popular destinations for Russian tourists and contribute to the country's economic development and social welfare.
