SCORE Project from Business Perspectives

Posted: Wednesday, November 15, 2017

After more than five years with the Vietnamese business community, the Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) Project, jointly deployed by VCCI-HCM and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), has proved very productive, helping businesses to enhance sustainable competitiveness and gradually join global value chains. The following are experience and opinions from companies that have joined the SCORE training programme.

Ms Truong Thi Thu Tram - Production Manager of Minh Man Production Trading Printing Co., Ltd
Minh Man participated in the SCORE Project’s Module 1 “Workplace Cooperation” from July to September 2017 and gained very encouraging effects.

In the spirit of self-awareness and self-action of all the staff in maintaining the 5S - Kaizen methodology, we have had 75 completed improvement projects. The working environment is always safe, clean and productive. Kaizen helps reduce unnecessary manoeuvres, increase productivity and strengthen the teamwork spirit. This thus helps increase profits for the company and increase incomes for employees.

Mr Le Van Minh - Director of Tuong Van CBG Co., Ltd
Our factory joined the SCORE Project with modules of “Workplace Cooperation” (2014 - 2015), “Quality Management” (2015) and "Occupational Health and Safety” (2017). After being tuned up, our factory is very clean and tidy. The layout of lean chair production is quite successful with takt-time reduced to 9 days from 14 days. With Workplace Cooperation and Quality Management Modules, we save an average of VND840 million annually. But, the greatest value of the SCORE Project for Tuong Van CBG Co., Ltd is the Kaizen Culture and the spirit of workplace cooperation that greatly enhances labour productivity and operational efficiency.

In my opinion, to make successful improvements, besides the support of SCORE experts, the company leadership must really want to reform, really want to do and strongly commit to do it as the world-renowned great composer John Cage says “I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones.”

Mr Nguyen Thanh Binh - Director of Nguyen Thanh Co., Ltd
Joining the SCORE Project’s Module 2 “Quality Management”, Nguyen Thanh Co., Ltd has obtained impressive achievements by increasing 27.5 per cent of working performance and saved US$50,000 a year by tuning-up activities such as rectifying work instructions at various stages, positioning quality control and randomly checking 10 per cent of semi-finished products.

SCORE-related improvements have been implemented effectively. We have solved many "bottlenecks" previously considered "impossible" by workers. SCORE's approach is highly practical and adaptable for employees of different qualifications in the company.

Mr Nguyen Tan Dat - Improvement Team Leader of Chutex International Co., Ltd
Joining the Cleaner Production Module of the SCORE Project, Chutex International Co., Ltd has improved its compressed air systems to reduce compressed air leaks to 15.8 per cent from 39.6 per cent (down 60 per cent); reduced water usage to 400 cubic metres a day from 650 cubic metres (down 38 per cent). By taking part in the SCORE Project and applying improvements, our company has reduced the waste and pollution and better use water, inputs and energy.

Mr Vu Manh Dong - Director of Dong Quoc Hung Co., Ltd
Dong Quoc Hung Co., Ltd joined Module 3 “Cleaner Production” with Component “5S & Kaizen Practices” and achieved remarkable improvement outcomes, helping the company cut more than VND125 million a year. We always want to make changes, to make strong production breakthroughs and we have initially accomplished this goal with SCORE Project.
