Vietnam, Poland Strengthening Multi-faceted Cooperation

Posted: Wednesday, November 22, 2017

Polish President Andrzej Duda is expected to pay an official visit to Vietnam by the end of 2017. The visit will be accompanied by many Polish businesses seeking to explore investment opportunities in Vietnam. High level Polish leaders are expected to participate in the Vietnam-Poland Business Forum.

The Polish government has identified Vietnam as one of the six key markets of Poland in the near future. In particular, Vietnam is expected to become a bridge for Polish enterprises to enter the Southeast Asian market of more than 630 million people.

Statistics show that from 1993 up to now, two-way trade turnover of Vietnam and Poland has increased continuously and rapidly. Between 2001 and 2006, two-way trade increased threefold, from US$117 million to US$330 million. In 2016, this figure reached nearly US$790 million.

Two-way trade between the two countries is expected to reach US$1 billion in 2017, evidenced by imports and exports between the two countries reaching nearly US$700 million in the first nine months of this year.

Vietnam exports to Poland mainly garments, agricultural products, foodstuffs and imports powdered milk, western medicine, equipment for the coal industry, shipbuilding, iron and steel and some consumer goods and agricultural products.

In addition to the traditional cooperation fields such as mining, geology, machine building and mechanics, the two countries has now expanded cooperation in fisheries, preservation of historical relics and the shipbuilding industry.

Thanks to the credit policy, in recent years, the export of machine materials, equipment for shipbuilding industry has always occupied the leading position in Poland's exports to Vietnam.

On investment cooperation, up to September 20, 2017, Poland’s investment in Vietnam reached over US$182.88 million, ranking 37th out of 126 countries and territories investing in Vietnam.

Polish FDI projects are mostly 100 percent foreign invested projects focusing on real estate, manufacturing and communication. Vietnam also has several investment projects in Poland in the fields of food service and food industry.

Preliminary statistics of the Embassy of Vietnam show that by the end of 2016, the Vietnamese community in Poland reached over 30,000 people. The first Vietnamese people came here between the 1950s and 1980s in the form of student exchanges between Vietnam and Poland.

During the visit to Vietnam, Polish delegation is expected to meet with former Vietnamese students who used to work or study in Poland to promote "the precious source “in the cooperation between the two countries.

Possessing a good traditional relationship, Vietnam and Poland have the full foundation and potential to further develop the relations to new heights. According to experts, it is now a good time to "warm up" that relationship, and fully tap the potential.
