Party Chief Holds Talks with French President

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong asserted that Viet Nam regards the development of the relationship with France as a priority in its diplomatic policy at his talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on March 27 in Paris. 

During the talks, the two leaders exchanged views on the situation in each country and discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, especially security matters.

They supposed that disputes should be addressed via peaceful means in line with international law and countries’ roles and responsibilities should be promoted for regional peace, security and development.

The two leaders discussed measures to establish frameworks and orientations to create new framework and orientations for deepening strategic partnership, opening a new development period for the bilateral relations, hailing their 45-year diplomatic ties and the five-year strategic partnership.

The two leaders consented to maintain and increase high-level contacts and meetings, improve the efficiency of dialogue and cooperation mechanisms, expand affiliation across the board and people-to-people exchange and local-to-local cooperation, and boost coordination in regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The French President suggested Viet Nam facilitate French businesses to invest and implement cooperation projects in Viet Nam, accelerating cooperation in defense and security and personnel training, and boosting parliamentary cooperation.

The Party chief expressed his hope that Viet Nam will receive efficient assistance and cooperation from France.

Both sides agreed to take practical measures to boost trade, exchange measures to speed up important cooperation projects on telecommunications, energy, aviation, safe water, climate change, environment, and seek supportive measures to enable their businesses’ market entry as well as strengthen cooperation in other areas including high technology, clean energy, organic agriculture and digital industry.

They discussed ways to promote cooperation in science-technology, healthcare, energy and education and training. The French President suggested the establishment of French schools in Viet Nam.

They assented to speed up the signing and ratification of the Viet Nam and the EU Free Trade Agreement in 2018, creating new forces for economic, trade and investment collaboration between the two nations.

Party Chief Trong proposed France create favorable conditions for Overseas Vietnamese in France.

The occasion, the Vietnamese leader invited the French President to visit Viet Nam in a convenient time. The French President accepted the invitation with pleasure.

The same day, President Emmanuel Macron held a grand banquet for the Vietnamese Party leader and the high-ranking delegation from Viet Nam. 

The two leaders witnessed the signing of some significant cooperation deals and chaired the press conference.
