Italy Shares Experience in Geographical Indications with Vietnam

The Embassy of Italy in Vietnam in cooperation with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the National Office of Intellectual Property and the National Economics University brought together organisations, researchers and enterprises to discuss all aspects of geographical indications at a workshop to this effect in Hanoi on April 17.

The workshop delved into three main topics: Advertising tools for geographical indications; roles of science and technology in the protection of geographical indications; and contribution of geographical indications in promotion of the local economy.

The first part of the workshop was moderated by Mr Claudio Dordi from the University of Bocconi, Milan. It was designed to present geographical indications for Italy and Vietnam and opportunities in upcoming the EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement.

The second part moderated by Mr Mariano Anderle, Scientific Attaché of the Embassy of Italy in Vietnam, addressed effects of science and technology on quality and traceability of foods represented by Ms Alessandra Guidi from the University of Pisa, Mr Vu Nguyen Thanh from the Hanoi-based Food Industry Research Institute and Ms Nguyen Thi Minh Tu from the Hanoi University of Technology.

The final, chaired by Ms Tran Thi Thanh Tam, Deputy Director of the VCCI Centre for Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises, introduced some of the most successful stories on geographical indications in Italy and Vietnam.
