A customs delegation of Vietnam led by Mr Nguyen Van Quan, General Director of the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDC), attended the WCO Asia Pacific Regional Heads of Customs Administrations Meeting in Fiji from May 12 to 18, 2018. The meeting brought together over 80 delegates from most member countries, and representatives of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) and regional WCO offices.

Speaking at the meeting, Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of World Customs Organisation, emphasised the importance of customs in the Asia-Pacific region amid growing pressures of regional trade and trade facilitation, while ensuring security and safety for the community. He highlighted completed and ongoing WCO activities as well as WCO strategic initiatives and strategies in 2017-2018, particularly the Mercator Programme that supports member states to implement the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and studies to recommend members on new forms of trade such as e-commerce and control of illegal financial affairs, as well as new tools like Blockchain. In addition, he represented WCO's key activities in the coming time.

At the WCO Asia Pacific Regional Heads of Customs Administrations Meeting, leaders adopted the 2018-2020 Strategic Plan with three main pillars: (i) security and trade facilitation; (ii) control and compliance; and (iii) capacity building. The strategic planning in this phase refined and streamlined to focus on contents that members are interested in.
