Argentina Wants to Boost Agricultural Exports to Vietnam

Posted: Thursday, May 24, 2018

Dr Doan Duy Khuong, Vice President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), received an Argentinean business delegation led by Madam Marisa Bircher, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Industry, and accompanied by Mr Juan C. Valle Raleigh, Ambassador of Argentina to Vietnam, on May 16, 2018.

Ms Marisa Bircher introduced Argentina and its agricultural strengths. Argentina is currently a G20 country which has a strong agricultural and industrial production. At present, its agricultural products contributed up to 60 per cent of the country's total export value. Typical exports include fruits, cereals, beef and especially wine.

Argentina's agricultural products are exported to more than 70 countries and territories in the world. In 2018, Argentine fruits have penetrated some new markets such as the United States, Colombia and China. Its wines are very competitive in the world market.

Vietnam and Argentina have witnessed a fine partnership in all fields in recent years. Economic, trade and investment cooperation have kept developing and becoming the foundation for their long-term bilateral relationship. In 2017, the two-way trade value topped US$3 billion, doubling in five years and making Argentina the second largest trading partner in Latin America. And, Vietnam is the third largest importer of Argentina on the globe.

Ms Marisa Bircher affirmed that Argentina wants to boost trade performance between the two countries. The delegation will also work with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam to discuss this content and prepare for the compilation of a free trade agreement of the two nations.

Concurring with Ms Marisa Bircher, VCCI Vice President Khuong said that VCCI and the Argentina Chamber of Commerce and Industry signed a cooperation agreement for many years. VCCI is willing to create favourable conditions for Argentine businesses to enter Vietnam and will act as a bridge connecting the two governments and businesses to enhance trade opportunities.

He added that although Vietnam - Argentina economic relationship has been growing, it is not commensurate with potentials and strengths of the two countries. The trade value of US$3 billion is quite modest. The VCCI Vice President suggested the two sides carry out specific action programmes and launch practical activities to support enterprises of the two countries to promote business cooperation.
