Posted: Friday, June 29, 2018

Mr Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Vice Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Group, recently paid a working visit to Vietnam. He met with senior leaders in the Government of Vietnam and the UN staff and attended the sixth session of the sixth Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF 6). The two-day visit of the UNDP Administrator aims to strengthen the partnership between the Vietnamese Government and the UN, focusing on sustainable development efforts of Vietnam.

During the meetings, both sides focused discussions on bilateral ties as well as joint work with partners and parties concerned in the process of realising the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, including response to climate change and natural disaster mitigation so that no one is left behind.

This was Steiner’s first visit to Vietnam since he took office as UNDP Administrator in 2017. The visit took place at a time when the Vietnamese Government and the UNDP were celebrating the 40th anniversary of partnership. As a forerunner in the One UN Initiative/Delivering as One and a leader in the reform of the UN development system (adopted in the Resolution of the General Assembly 72/279), Vietnam has committed to fulfilling the UN sustainable development goals and dealing with development challenges. Remarkably, the partnership of Vietnam and the UN in adopting the signing of the One Strategic Plan 2017 - 2021.
