Enhancing Vietnam-Korea Relationship and Cooperation Ties

The Vietnam-Korea Friendship Association (VKFA) held its third National Congress in the term of 2018 - 2023 at the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) on September 20, 2018. Dr Vu Tien Loc, President of VCCI, was re-elected Chairman of VKFA for the third tenure.

Vietnam and the Republic of Korea established diplomatic relations in 1992. To date, Korea has become one of Vietnam's leading partners, ranking first in investment, second in official development aid (after Japan), and third in trade (after China and the United States). In recent years, Korea has emerged as one of major tourist destinations for Vietnam, with more than 100 direct flights a week.

In addition, the two sides have deepened and broadened cooperative ties in politics - diplomacy, finance - banking, transport infrastructure, information technology, science and technology, agriculture - forestry - fishery, education, and culture.

Apart from bilateral cooperation, Vietnam and Korea are also important partners with active contributions to regional and international multilateral forums and frameworks.

At the first meeting, the VKFA Executive Committee elected the Standing Board comprised of 13 members, including the chairperson, vice chairpersons and general secretary. Dr Vu Tien Loc, President of VCCI, re-elected VKFA Chair in the third term from 2018 to 2023. Mr Dang Hoang Can was voted Head of the Inspection Board.

Speaking at the congress, Dr Loc said, “I hope to receive further support and coordination of authorities, stakeholders, the Korean Embassy in Vietnam, the Korea- Vietnam Friendship Associations, the Koreans Love Vietnam Association, the Ly Family Association in Korea, the Korea Business Association in Vietnam, and other people's friendship organisations.”

In the review report on the past tenure, the Executive Committee emphasised that, in the past term, the Vietnam-Korea Friendship Association always receives guidance, direction and support from the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO); passionate support and cooperation from central and local bodies, social and economic organisations, especially the Central Commission for External Relations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs; and valuable assistance and support of VKFA chapters.

Mr Bui Khac Son, Vice President of VUFO, spoke highly of VKFA’s efforts from central to local levels in the past term, congratulated the new leadership and gave some working suggestions for the third term.

The congress elected a 47-member executive committee for the 2018 - 2023 tenure and adopted five important contents. Dr Vu Tien Loc, said, “Documents adopted this time are crystallised from wisdom and sincere aspirations with the goal of building, developing and strengthening friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Korean people and enhancing mutual understanding between the two countries as well.”

The association has set specific objectives to make more effective contributions to friendship development between the two countries for the term from 2018 to 2023.

One, the association will continue to renovate and improve its performance; communicate on domestic and foreign relations policies of the Party and the State of Vietnam and doi moi (renovation) achievements of Vietnam to the two countries’ peoples; and deepen friendship and cooperation ties of the two peoples for peace, national independence, democracy and social progress.

Two, the association will further build and strengthen its own operations; develop new partnerships to foster the groundwork for promoting peace, solidarity, friendship and people-to-people cooperation, seize the support of Korea and its partners for the cause of economic and social development and prosperity of Vietnam.
