Breakthrough Outcomes

Posted: Wednesday, January 02, 2019

In 2018, the Vietnamese tourism industry has developed on a new platform constituted by many favourable conditions. This boost aimed to attract international visitors has been leveraged by policy changes such as Resolution 08-NQ/TW of the Politburo on tourism development into a key economic sector; the amended Law on Tourism, effective from January 1, 2016; the government's drastic direction and timely application of visa exemption for citizens of five Western European countries, piloting an electronic visa for 46 nationalities.

Given that the number of domestic tourists exceeds 80 million arrivals, the total tourism revenue in 2018 may reach about 8 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP). Although the growth slowed over 2017, this is the third consecutive year that Vietnamese tourism recorded impressive growth of over 20 per cent in international visitors. Moreover, the average spending value of international travellers from most markets picked up, with the largest growth seen from South Koreans from US$133.4 to US$171.5 a day. Airway passengers, which usually have high spending capacity, accounted for 84.4 per cent of international tourist arrivals.

The image of changing, attractive and superior tourism of Vietnam is better known in the world. Vietnam is granted the “Leading destinations in Asia and Oceania” by the World Travel Awards; and two resorts in Da Nang won the “Most Luxury Beach Resort in the World for Families” and the “Most Romantic Hotel in the World” by the World Luxury Hotel Awards - the most prestigious award on the planet for hotel services. For the second year in a row, Vietnam has been awarded the “Best Golf Destination in Asia” Award. Many destinations in Vietnam are voted as favourite destinations by world famous travel magazines. For example, the Golden Bridge at Sun World Ba Na Hills (Da Nang) was named among 124 most impressive tourist destinations in 2018.

The Vietnamese tourism market continues to attract the fancy of many international airlines (currently, 52 international airlines are operating in Vietnam) and draw a lot of investment capital into tourism projects. Over the past years, the tourism sector has attracted more than US$15 billion of foreign investment, along with billions of US dollars of investment fund from large domestic corporations, for tourism infrastructure development (including many coastal resorts, amusement parks and 5-star hotels). In the current digital development trend, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) and many travel companies in Vietnam have gradually applied smart tourism technology on mobile devices and tourism data digitisation to improve tourist service quality and approach smart tourism trends.

The number of over 15 million foreign tourists marked a milestone for Vietnamese tourism. Recently, two important tourism projects (Restructuring the tourism industry and applying information technology to tourism) were approved by the Prime Minister. Driven by active support from local authorities, reasonable policies and resource allocation, the two projects will help clear limitations and bottlenecks of the Vietnamese tourism industry. Certainly, in the coming time, the sector will continue to grow and develop to become a spearhead economic sector of the country.

2018 is a successful year of the Vietnamese tourism, featured by outstanding results and excellent completion of assigned plans and the higher position of this sector. Many tourism projects and resorts have large scale, high quality and modern business methods towards international standards. State tourism and service management has made significant progress towards professionalism, quality, and international standards and practices. The tourism industry has made efforts to execute instructions of the Government, the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, promote internal resources, proactively renovate the process of carrying out sustainable development tasks. The success is currently illustrated by the number of international tourists and domestic tourists and total tourism revenue value in 2018. Tourism products are increasingly developed to meet a wide range of customers. The tourism environment is regularly supervised. Tourism human resources are gradually upgraded.

In addition, awareness and actions of authorities, the business community and people on the important role of tourism economy and their responsibility to tourism have been markedly changed for better. Localities throughout the country, especially key tourism provinces, have specific policies, solutions and endeavours to improve the investment environment, reform administrative procedures to attract investment capital into investment, develop a wide range of tourism products to target at new markets, control and enhance service quality to establish motivating regions for Vietnam’s tourism development.
