With a lot of investment for infrastructure, landscapes and tourism products, tourist arrivals to Sapa are expected to soar during the Lunar New Year 2019 - the Year of Pig, resulting in full hotel room occupancy. According to a survey of tour operators, room reservations increased by 30% from a year ago.

Many appeals to tourists
According to statistical data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), tourist arrivals to Lao Cai province were estimated at 4.2 million in 2018, an increase of nearly 20% over 2017. Of the sum, international tourists accounted for 720,000 and domestic travelers reached over 3.5 million. Tourism revenue was projected at VND13,400 billion (US$578 million) in the year, 13% higher than the full-year plan and 42% higher than in 2017.

Explaining this growth, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Dinh Dung said, “Sapa is a famous tourism destination with many charming landscapes and cultural diversity. In recent years, infrastructure has been invested and tourism promotion has been accelerated to lure more domestic and foreign tourists. But, that has entailed accommodation overloading although some big hotels have been built.”

According to a recent survey by Purewow website, Sapa is ranked 5th among 50 most beautiful destinations on the planet. Located at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level, the average temperature is from 18-20 degrees Celsius. Thus, this place is pleasant and relaxing at any time of the year. Especially in winter, Sapa has snow, a rare climate type in Vietnam that makes this place more attractive to tourists. Every morning, the town is covered by a thin layer of fog, making poetic mountains and villages looming from a distance.

Going to Sapa, visitors will have the opportunity to admire majestic and unique mountain scenery. Sapa looks like it is putting on a new cloak each season. Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range is ranked 7th among the 28 most beautiful destinations in the world in 2019 and is also the most interesting destination in Southeast Asia by the National Geographic - a prestigious magazine based in the United States.

Patrick Wilson, an American tourist, said, “From the cable car above, all of Sapa's beauty will come into your sight. When you reach the peak of the mountain at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters, you will feel like you are immersed in a sea of white clouds floating in the sky. This is a very impressive experience.”

In addition to the majestic natural scenery, Sapa also has a diverse and charming culture of ethnic minorities. To fully experience the local culture, visitors can come to Cat Cat, Ta Van and Ta Phin villages or join early market fairs to see how local people trade and communicate with each other or make unique cultural products.

Mr. Tang Van Toan, Director of Thien Phu Lao Cai Restaurant, said, prolific and typical cuisine is also a big plus for Sapa tourism. Hot fragrant grilled dishes fill night markets and streets for tourists to enjoy with friends. Nothing is more wonderful than sitting with friends around a small table to taste barbecue, and sipping wine in cold weather. In addition, typical upland dishes such as sturgeon hotpot, sticky rice, spring fish, corn cakes, cattle meat and dried meat are also loved by many tourists.

Fully occupied hotels
With a unique mountainous climate, featured by thinly misty coverage, snowy winter, Sapa has become a tourist attraction during the Lunar New Year holidays.

With a lot of investment for infrastructure, landscapes and tourism products, tourist arrivals to Sapa are expected to soar during the Lunar New Year 2019 - the Year of Pig, resulting in full hotel room occupancy.
Workers will have nine days off for the Lunar New Year 2019. With such a long leave, many office workers are planning to go with friends and families to Sapa as one of top choices. Like any other year, room availability is scarce. Not being quick enough, tourists have to accept farther accommodation facilities.

Realizing prospects of Sapa tourism development, many 4-5 star hotels have been built in Sapa, including Sun Hotel and Pistachio Hotel Sapa. Nevertheless, according to the survey of travel companies, Sapa had no available rooms during the Western New Year holidays and may see this reoccur during the Lunar New Year 2019. Data of Vietsense shows that room reservations climb 30% this year.

Mr. Nguyen Van Quang, Director of Tourism Consulting and Hotel Management at Viet Orient Hospitality (VOH), said, we have mobilized all our resources to better serve customers. Office workers have nine days off during this Lunar New Year and many book hotel rooms quite early. Although it is almost a month until the Lunar New Year, almost all hotel rooms have been reserved. To support customers, 4-star hotels offer a preferential room rate of only VND750,000 (US$32) a day.

Agoda surveys and booking data show that the current room rate of 2-star hotels is VND300,000 - 500,000 (US$13-21.5) a day during Tet. However, vacant rooms are few and may be fully occupied in the days to come.
