ADB Supports Connectivity Improvement in Mountainous Northwest

Posted: Monday, March 11, 2019

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Vietnam signed a US$188 million loan to improve and upgrade 198 kilometers of roads in Vietnam’s mountainous northwest.

The loan will finance the upgrading of 198 kilometers of roads and connect some cities and districts of Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Yen Bai provinces with the Noi Bai - Lao Cai Highway, part of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Kunming-Hai Phong Transport Corridor that connects Hanoi with northern mountainous provinces and cities of Vietnam and Yunnan province of China.

The Australian Government will provide US$4.481 million non-refundable aid to finance detailed technical design of roads. The grant will also support programs to control vehicle loads, HIV/AIDS and human trafficking, as well as enhance awareness of road safety, thus helping local people in poor areas to access and deal with vehicle speed and increased traffic vehicle density on the expressway. The project will ensure high standards in road construction and overcome climate change risks, including special climate-adaptive components such as reinforcing landslide areas.
