The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) announced the top 100 sustainable businesses in Vietnam in 2022 at a ceremony on December 1 in Hanoi.

2022 is the 7th consecutive year of the Program for Benchmarking and Announcing Sustainable Businesses in Vietnam, also known as CSI Program. The program is organized by VCCI in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor. The program has received a broad response and participation of the business community across the country regardless of scale and industry of operation.

The Organizing Committee selected 148 qualified candidate profiles, 100 of them were singled out as the most outstanding sustainable businesses. In the Top 10 sustainable businesses in the trade, service and manufacturing sectors, State-owned, privately held and foreign-invested companies account for 40%, 25% and 35%, respectively.

Some of the top 100 sustainable enterprises include Garment Corporation 10, Nestle Vietnam Co., Ltd., Coca-Cola Vietnam Co., Ltd., Vietnam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk), TNG Investment and Trading Joint Stock Company, BRG Group, Phu Nhuan Jewelry Joint Stock Company (PNJ), and Bao Viet Group.

In addition to honoring the main category, the program also honors businesses that perform well in three categories: Promoting women's empowerment and gender equality in the workplace; advancing responsible business and respect for children's rights in business; implementing the circular economy model, and adopting climate change responses.

Adopted as a basis for assessing corporate sustainability this year, the Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI) 2022 was updated with 130 indicators, of which 68% are legal compliance indicators, mandatory for all businesses, and 32% are sustainability indicators. This showed that just by complying with the law, companies can build a solid foundation for sustainable production and business.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, Politburo member and Head of the Central Economic Commission, stated that sustainable development is a strategic approach and an indispensable choice for development models of the Vietnamese business community and suggested that Vietnamese enterprises and entrepreneurs should further promote their initiative, innovation and adaptivity; strengthen cooperation and connectivity to create overall strength; transform business mindset toward responsible business, boost economic growth in harmony with environmental and social benefits; actively promote new economic models to provide more development space; and closely follow development guidelines and policies of the Party, the State and the Government to find new directions and new opportunities, anticipate and embrace trends, and build their own competitive advantages.
Also at the ceremony, VCCI President Pham Tan Cong officially launched the Program on Benchmarking and Announcing Sustainable Businesses in Vietnam in 2023 and underlined that sustainable business will create a better world. Sustainable, responsible business is the foundation for breakthrough and successful development and is the key to enhancing corporate competitiveness. VCCI is committed to always working together with agencies, organizations and businesses in their efforts to build a sustainable business community in Vietnam for the sustainability and prosperity of the nation.
Speaking of the CSI Program 2022, Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh, Vice President of VCCI, Chair of VBCSD, and Deputy Director of the Steering Committee of the CSI Program 2022, said, “Besides positive responses from the business community, CSI and its Program also received great recognition from the Government for positively promoting sustainable business development. Specifically, the Government adopted important policies on sustainable development, including Directive 13/CT-TTg dated May 20, 2019, Decision 1362/QD-TTg dated October 11, 2019 on Sustainable Development Plan for the private business sector to 2025, with a vision to 2030, Resolution 136/NQ-TTg dated September 25, 2020 or annual Resolutions 02 (formerly Resolution 19/NQ-CP) on key tasks and solutions for a better business environment and higher national competitiveness, which are all integrated with the CSI Program for scaling up CSI in the business community.”
The CSI Program 2022 witnessed nearly 25% of first-time candidates, showing that more and more businesses are interested in the Program and sustainable development in general. The scoring of candidate profiles in 2022 was the highest ever, showing that sustainable governance in business has markedly improved, while information gathering and reporting have also been more effective.
