Thanh Binh Lao Cai Tea One-member Co., Ltd: Efficient, Sustainable Tea Management and Production Model

Thanh Binh Lao Cai Tea Company, formerly Thanh Binh Plantation, which was established in 1967, was transformed into a 100 percent State owned company. The company’s business areas include technical services namely technical support of material supply and seed for Muong Khuong tea material area and other areas of agricultural raw materials.
Over 14 years of consolidation and development, thanks to the close attention of Lao Cai Provincial People’s Committee and Muong Khuong district People's Committee, and the efficient coordination between the company and local authorities of eight communes, the company has achieved positive results in tea production. In 2000, tea area was 102.5 hectares. It is estimated to reach 1,602 hectares in 2013 and 2,000 hectares in 2015. Fresh tea bud output reached 350 tonnes in 2000, is expected to increase to 1,000 tonnes in 2013 and 1,800 tonnes in 2015. Production of dry tea in 2010 was 77 tonnes. It is expected to reach 60 tonnes in 2013 and 108 tonnes in 2015. Revenues in 2010 reached VND0.8 billion. In 2013 this number is VND60 billion and is expected to reach VND108 billion in 2015.
In 2012, Thanh Binh Tea Company was granted a certificate for 475 hectares of tea production under VietGap standards by the Environment Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In 2013 this area is 525 hectares. By 2015, the entire 2,000 hectares of tea of Muong Khuong district, managed by Thanh Binh Tea Company Limited, will be certified as safe tea production area under VietGap standards. Dried tea products of company are assured in quality. Food safety is highly appreciated by customers. Each year the products are sold out, and price is always at the top of Vietnam's tea industry. 95 percent of its products are exported to the Middle East and Taiwan, the remaining are for domestic consumption.
With efficient business operation over many years, the company has created over 6,000 jobs for local workers. The company fulfils its responsibility with its employees and tax obligations to the State. In recent years, the company is considered an effective trading enterprise with high revenue and profits year after year, and has been ranked a Class A business for many years.
The production model with effective management methods and links between company and farmer along with stable development and sustainable benefit of mutual benefit is considered an effective model which should be referred to and applied in other tea production areas in the country by local authorities and farmers.
