Chau Thanh is located in the northeast of Hau Giang province, adjacent to Can Tho City. With an advantageous traffic network consisting of National Highway 1A, Nam Song Hau Road and the Hau River, especially Hau Giang Port, Chau Thanh district has focused on attracting investment capital for industrial and service development.
Chau Thanh is a key development driver of Hau Giang province, especially for heavy industries, seafood processing and urbanization. The district has planned important industrial zones like Song Hau Industrial Park, Song Hau Industrial Urban Area, Dong Phu Industrial Complex and Phu Huu A Industrial Complex.

In the 2015 - 2020 term, Chau Thanh Provincial Party Committee focused on gardening economy, scientific and technological application to production, transformational changes in production models and focused investment on social and economic infrastructure as breakthrough stages for development.
With its locational advantages, good traffic system and well-invested infrastructure in industrial zones, Chau Thanh has attracted many large investors. Some industries have been fully leased by investors. Many big projects in operation have created great production value and generated many jobs.
Some typical projects in the district include Lee & Man Paper Vietnam, Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant, Coal Storage Site and Unburnt Building Material Factory (in Phu Huu A Industrial Zone); Minh Phu Seafood Processing Plant and Song Hau Surface Water Plant (in Song Hau Industrial Park).
For the agricultural sector, with its abundant water resources and fertile soil, Chau Thanh has focused on developing fruit farms for years, opting for high-value varieties and advanced agricultural production. The agricultural sector thus contributes greatly to local production value and budget revenue. In 2015 - 2020, the district's economy continued to develop quite rapidly. In 2020, the output value was estimated to reach VND19,636 billion, an increase of 64.7% over 2015. Economic structure has been reasonably shifted towards the desired pattern where the share of industry, trade and service is rising. The industrial and construction value reached VND60,477 billion, an average growth of 15.43% annually, accounting for more than 30% of the province’s production value.
These results have significantly helped improve local people’s income and living standards. In 2016, the district's per capita income was only VND33 million, but it climbed to over VND45 million in 2019. The poverty rate was 3.75%, down 6.27% in 2016.
In the 2020-2025 term, the Party Committee and the People’s Committee of Chau Thanh district will endeavor to mobilize all resources for rapid and sustainable socioeconomic development, focusing on industry, urban, service, agriculture and rural development. At the same time, the district will continue to improve people's material and spiritual lives and to be certified a district of new rural development standards.
The district will concentrate on some key tasks: Determining the approach and main goals of sustainable development - Developing environmentally friendly high-tech industries in industrial zones; expanding industrial park development, industrial real estate development, logistics services, socialized investment in socioeconomic infrastructure to create room and advantages for investment attraction.
Chau Thanh district will foster the development of dynamic urban areas, develop services, trade and real estate, and form attractive and unique resorts for people in Hau Giang and other localities.
The district will encourage enterprises to invest in the agricultural sector, form appropriate cooperation to improve the outcome of agricultural production and trading. It will quickly scale up effective economic models and speed up and raise the quality of new rural development.
Supporting businesses and investors
To achieve objectives and tasks, according to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, Chairman of Chau Thanh District People's Committee, the district government will continue to accelerate administrative reform, especially administrative procedure reform; improve the business investment environment, strongly apply information technology to build a friendly and enabling government; actively accompany people and businesses. These are considered breakthrough solutions to woo investors and realize socioeconomic development goals.
“The district will strengthen dialogues and solve difficulties and problems for businesses. In particular, it will pay special attention to land compensation, residential resettlement and site clearance in order to speed up the progress of investment projects,” he said.
The district will also further improve the single-window mechanism for better settlement of administrative procedures. In addition, it will strengthen coordination between government agencies on inspection to avoid annoying overlapping for businesses; and create favorable conditions for legal consulting organizations in providing legal advice to protect legitimate interests of enterprises.
Besides, in the coming time, Chau Thanh district will continue to invest in developing synchronous and modern infrastructure. To do so, it will attach much importance to improving planning quality, linking planning with use of investment capital sources, and promoting capital use efficiency. Chau Thanh district is determined not to invest beyond its capabilities to avoid outstanding debts in basic construction, but attract social investment resources for upgrading transport infrastructure, education and health.
After more than 15 years of development with Hau Giang province, Chau Thanh district has today made important and comprehensive progress; maintained stability of national defense and security; and stabilized people's livelihoods. These are important foundations for the district to enter a new stage: Extensive integration and development. At the same time, it will promote its position as one of driving forces of the province's development, industrialization and modernization.
