The Vietnamese Ministry of Finance has decided not to impose rice export tax from December 19, 2008.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung July 21, 2008 issued tax imposed on rice sold at US$800 a ton to reduce export and ensure national food security.

Huynh Minh Hue, general secretary of the Vietnam Food Association said the tax slash has little impact on the country’s rice export because rice is now selling for prices much lower than the US$800 level.

As of December 19, Vietnam exported 4.479 million tons of rice worth US$2.576 billion. (The Youth Dec 25 p14)
