Vietnam Seafood Sector Gains Bumper Harvest

Vietnamese seafood sector has reaped a bumper harvest in 2008 with export revenue and production output hitting record, according to deputy minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Viet Thang.
 
In 2008, Vietnam raked in USUS$4.562 billion from seafood exports, up 21.2 per cent, or by VND700 million against last year.
 
Of the total, shrimp exports were estimated to contribute more than USUS$1.7 billion while pangasius exports contributing nearly USUS$1.5 billion.
 
This year, the country’s total aquatic product output reached 4.58 million tons, the highest level so far, including 2.13 million tons by fishing boats and 2.45 million tons from aquaculture farms, up 2.9 per cent and 15.3 per cent year on year, respectively.
 
As of late 2008, the country has 123,609 fishing boats, of which 18,344 boats have capacity of more than 90CV. (The People)
