Vietnam to Export 1.5 Mln Tons of Rice to the Philippines in 2009
Vietnam will export a total of 1.5 million tons of rice to the Philippines in 2009, accounting for between 30 per cent and 33.3 per cent of the country’s total export volume in the year.
Currently, local companies are preparing for delivery of 500,000 tons in February and March.
Meanwhile, export price of Vietnamese rice has increased by US$20 a ton from previous month to US$500 a ton of 5 per cent broken rice, and US$400 a ton of 25 per cent broke rice, FOB.
Vietnam is forecast to export between 4.5 million tons of rice worth more than US$2 billion in 2009, of which some 2.8 million tons will be shipped in the first half. The figures will show decreases of 4.5 per cent on year in volume and 30 per cent in value.
Some 40 per cent of the volume will be for traditional markets like the Philippines, Cuba and Malaysia while the remainder will be for potential ones such as Africa, Japan and Australia.
According to the General Customs Department, Vietnamese rice was exported to 121 markets in 2008, up by 40 markets from 2007. The country now has 165 rice exporting companies, up by 60 companies on year. (Vietnam Economic Times, Vinanet)
