Vietnam’s export of tra and basa catfish to Egypt is faced with difficulties as the foreign country is inspecting Vietnamese catfish, according to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Luong Le Phuong.

The deputy minister said the inspection was conducted following the rumor that Vietnamese catfish contains carcinogenic antibiotic, adding that Vietnam is likely to halt exporting catfish to Egypt until final result of the inspection is published.

Phuong said the MARD and the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers will discuss with Egypt solution to the problem.

Egypt is a key importer of Vietnamese catfish with revenue hitting US$55 million in 2008. (Capital Security)
