Viettel, MobiFone to Enter 3G Market This Month
Military Telecom Corp. (Viettel) and MobiFone are completing final procedures to provide their 3G services within this month, after VinaPhone became the first local mobile phone operator to roll out the service in October.
MobiFone will finish the installation of 2,400 3G base transceiver stations (BTS) to provide 3G mobile services to 52% of Vietnam’s population and 100% populous urban areas nationwide in December.
MobiFone will raise the number of BTS to 7,700 in the next three years.
The company will also sign deals for roaming its 3G network with other 50 networks in the world at the time of service rollout.
Viettel may enter the market within December, six months earlier than expected, after the service was piloted in Ho Chi Minh City in October. Its network will cover 86% of the population, with 5,000 BTS, a senior official said.
The firm will invest nearly VND12.8 trillion in the 3G network in the next three years, the newswire said.
The two remaining qualified networks, EVN Telecom and HT Mobile will start the service in the first half of next year. (vnexpress)
