The Vietnam Environment Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment hosted a seminar entitled “Policy and finance for environmental protection in extractive activities” in Hanoi. The event was part of a cooperation programme with State-run Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp (JOGMEC) concerning the exchange of legal regulations on finance and environmental protection in mining activities of Japan and Vietnam. This seminar also collected ideas for the Prime Minister’s Decision in lieu of amended Decision No. 71/2008/QD-TTg.

Addressing at the conference, Duong Hoang Tung, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Environment Administration, said: Extractive activities have left much impact on environment, ecosystem and human health. Therefore, the environmental protection in extractive activities is particularly concerned by the Party and the State. The Prime Minister’s Decision 71/2008/QD-TTg on deposit, reform and restoration of environment for vis-a-vis mining activities is a basically complete step of legal mechanism for environmental protection in mining activities.

At the seminar, Japanese experts exchanged and shared experience in policy building and financial mechanism for environmental protection in mining activities.
