The Ministry of Post & Telecoms has licensed the Vietnam Power Telecoms Co. (VP Telecoms) under the Electricity of Vietnam to provide a nationwide mobile phone service.
A VP Telecoms official said his company would launch its mobile phone service from the second quarter of this year, with an initial dialing code of 096.
The company's mobile phone network will be based on the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) 2000-1X EVDO technology. The company has already launched the service on a trial basis in ten cities and provinces.
According to the official, VP Telecom will make full use of the CDMA technology to provide a handful of value-added services, such as positioning subscribers and data transmission.
"We choose the CDMA because it is modern and widely used throughout the world. This will enable us to compete against those networks using GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) technology," said VP Telecom Deputy director Nguyen Manh Bang.
