Vietnam Exports 200 Tons of Litchi Product to Switzerland

The northern Ninh Binh province-based Dong Giao Food Imports and Exports Company has exported its first 200 tons of puréed litchi, equivalent to 500 tons of fresh litchi to Switzerland.

The report was made by Nguyen Van Gan, Head of Dong Giao’s business department, who added that the company has made some changes to its existing pineapple processing line so that it can puréed litchi.

“In order to have one ton of purée, we have to process 2.5 tons of fresh fruit,” said Mr Gan.

Along with the 200 tons of litchi already exported to the Swiss market, the Dong Giao Company also shipped litchi to the US to explore its potential. Though the company had to refuse original orders due to a lack of capacity, Dong Giao will expand, said Mr Gan. This year, they plan to export several hundred tons of product while the market demand may reach thousands of tons.

Due to the failure of the current litchi crop, the company has not yet collected enough fruit for export. Peeling and preparing are still done by hand and is very time-consuming.

In related news, the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development has previously signed a contract to export 500 tons of litchi to Russia and certain European markets. This year also witnessed the first agreement to export litchi to Malaysia.
