Vietnam’s footwear and leather industry is forecast to earn US$3.3 billion in 2006, slightly lower than this year’s estimation of US$3.4 billion, according to Ministry of Industry (MoI).

The forecast was based on the growing demands of the US and Japanese markets. For the US market, export value is expected to increase by 30 per cent in the first six months of next year.

The footwear industry, however, will have to cope with difficulties caused by the increase in material costs.

The MoI is urging footwear enterprises to try to secure material supplies and expand markets by attending international fairs.

In the first nine months of this year, Vietnam earned US$2.22 billion from exporting leather and footwear products, a year-on-year increase of 13 per cent.
