The US is now the number-one import market for Vietnamese furniture and handicraft products, according to reports at a seminar on the export of handicrafts to the US.

The seminar was held by the American Department under the Ministry of Trade, the Hanoi Department of Trade, the Vietnam Association of Handicraft Villages, the Vietnam Trade Office in the US and the Home Accents Today Magazine in Hanoi on November 14.

At the seminar, vice chairwoman of the Reed Business Information Group Connie Lineberry said to secure a firm foothold in the US market, Vietnamese handicraft products must be more diverse and better designed.

According to the Trade Promotion Department under the Ministry of Trade, Vietnam targets to gain as many as US$717 million from furniture and handicraft exports to the US this year, representing a rise of 75 per cent against last year and accounting for 50 per cent of the total export turnover in this category.

In the first ten months of this year, earnings from woodwork shipments reached US$1.2 billion, up 43.1 per cent on-year, the Government Statistics Office said.
