Prices of Imported Electronic Products Fall Sharply

The prices of imported electronic products in Vietnam have been sharply reduced after the country implemented a tariff reduction roadmap for ASEAN-origin imports under the CEPT/AFTA Agreement over one month ago.

Accordingly, the prices of electronic products imported from other ASEAN countries such as digital cameras, air-conditioners, laptops, and LCD screen televisions decreased 5-10 per cent against last year.

Especially, popular household utensils like irons, rice cookers, gas cookers, microwave ovens and blenders saw price drops of 15-20 per cent.

The price decreases were attributed to a massive inflow of ASEAN-origin electronic goods after the new tariff system took effect.

According to specialists, made-in-Vietnam electronic products are now as good as those from China and other ASEAN countries in quality, features and variety. Thus, Vietnamese enterprises can compete not only with imported goods in the local market but also export their products to other countries in the region.

Vietnam is expected to fetch US$2 billion from electronic exports in 2006, compared with US$1.5 billion last year, according the Vietnam Association of Electronics Businesses.
