Four Telecom Firms Licensed to Pilot Wimax Services in Vietnam
The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has recently licensed four telecom companies to trial Wimax services in Vietnam, a move to develop its fast-growing telecom industry, said Nguyen Xuan Tru, deputy director of the Ministry’s Telecommunications Department.
The test companies include Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Corp (VNPT), the military-run Vietnam Military Telecom Corp. (Viettel), FPT Telecom and Vietnam Television and Technology Investment and Development Co. (VTC).
Tru said these companies are to have access to the 3.3-3.4GHz frequency band for one year under the International Telecommunications Union’s requirements. “If the trial run is successful, the ministry will consider officially applying Wimax,” he added.
Wimax, or worldwide interoperability for microwave access, can provide broadband wireless access up to 50 km with one fixed transmission station, a superior version to the Wifi range of 50 m.
With simple installation, the service can bring great conveniences to users, he explained.
However, under the current rule, only State-owned companies or firms in which the State holds the lion’s share are allowed to provide the Wimax service.
