On the morning of June 5, at the Ho Guom Cultural Information Center (No. 2 Le Thai To Street, Hoan Kiem Ward), the Hanoi People’s Committee organized the city-level launch program in response to World Environment Day and Environment Action Month 2026 under the theme “Hanoi Joins Hands for Clean Air and Green Transportation.”

Hanoi Vice Chairman Bui Duy Cuong speaks at the event

The program was organized to create a peak communication campaign and mobilize the participation of government agencies at all levels, sectors, the business community, and residents of the capital in environmental protection efforts, air quality improvement, the promotion of green transportation and green transition, and the preparation of conditions for the pilot implementation of a low-emission zone in the Hoan Kiem area starting from July 1, 2026.

Speaking at the event, Hanoi Vice Chairman Bui Duy Cuong emphasized that Hanoi is entering a new stage of development in which environmental protection is no longer solely the responsibility of the environmental sector but a shared responsibility of the entire political system, authorities at all levels, the Fatherland Front, mass organizations, the business community, and every citizen. The city identifies clean air as a tangible right of its residents; green transportation as an inevitable trend; and green transition as the pathway for Hanoi’s sustainable development in the future.

Hoan Kiem Ward People’s Committee Chairman Trinh Hoang Tung affirmed the role of grassroots authorities in bringing environmental protection policies to every residential area.

Responding to the City’s call, Hoan Kiem Ward People’s Committee Chairman Trinh Hoang Tung affirmed that grassroots authorities would focus on integrating environmental protection policies into every residential neighborhood, street, and the daily lives of residents. The City’s decision to select Hoan Kiem for the pilot implementation of a low-emission zone from July 1, 2026 is both an honor and a major responsibility for the locality. “A policy can only succeed when it receives genuine public consensus and participation. Grassroots authorities must communicate policies in an easy-to-understand manner, organize implementation close to the people, and work together with residents to resolve issues arising in practice,” Mr. Tung stressed.

At the launch ceremony, the City officially launched Environment Action Month 2026 and also initiated Green Transportation Transition Day. Hanoi called on communes and wards across the city to simultaneously carry out environmental sanitation campaigns, landscape improvements, the cleanup of waste accumulation sites, drainage clearance, and tree maintenance; promote public awareness against waste burning and straw burning; and encourage reduced use of private vehicles in favor of environmentally friendly modes of transportation.

Delegates, residents, and visitors participated in a walking event in support of Green Transportation Transition Day in the Hoan Kiem Lake area.

Immediately after the launch ceremony, delegates, residents, and visitors took part in a range of communication activities and green transportation experiences around Hoan Kiem Lake. Participants also learned about the objectives, roadmap, benefits, and implementation plans for the pilot low-emission zone. The City also organized the seminar “Green Transportation Transition Day” to share international experiences, discuss solutions for developing green transportation, implementing low-emission zones, and promoting collaboration among authorities, businesses, experts, and the community.

As the professional advisory agency in the environmental sector, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment has identified its priorities as providing sound policy advice, taking swift action, ensuring close coordination, and implementing practical measures. In the coming period, the Department will focus on concretizing the provisions of the Capital Law in the environmental field; strengthening air pollution control; coordinating the implementation of green transportation and low-emission zones; addressing water pollution and restoring rivers; promoting the circular economy; and spreading green actions throughout society.

A large number of residents, youth union members, and organizations participated in the launch ceremony in response to World Environment Day in the Hoan Kiem Lake area.

According to the plan, activities in response to Environment Action Month 2026 will be carried out throughout June, with a peak period from June 1–8. In addition to seminars and thematic discussions, the agriculture and environment sector will launch the movement “Green Offices – Green Transportation – Green Civil Servants” among officials, civil servants, public employees, and workers.
