U.S. Navy Ship Peleliu Concludes Pacific Partnership Humanitarian Medical Mission
The U.S. Navy ship Peleliu departed Da Nang on July 25 following 10 days of humanitarian assistance to the people of Vietnam. U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Michael W. Marine and Mr. Tran Van Hao, Chief of the Executive Office of the People's Committee of Da Nang City, participated in a farewell ceremony with Captain Bruce Stewart, Pacific Partnership Commander, and the Pacific Partnership participants at Da Nang’s Tien Sa Port.
This Pacific Partnership mission was made possible through the support of the Government of Vietnam, partnerships with local medical professionals, and the support of non-governmental organizations including Project Hope, Aloha Medical Mission and the Pre-Dental Society from University of California at San Diego. The San Diego-based Peleliu supported a variety of medical, dental, educational and preventive medicine services.
During the ten days, medical teams provided a variety of services in Da Nang, treating 2,300 patients and performing 12,200 medical procedures for Vietnamese patients. In addition, team members, including hundreds of volunteers from the ship, performed repair and construction projects at a number of medical centers, clinics, orphanages and schools in the area.
Pacific Partnership members include representatives from Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Singapore, and several non-governmental organizations. (US Embassy Press Release)
