Foreign direct investment (FDI) into Mekong Delta provinces is estimated to reach US$799 million since early this year, state media said.

Hau Giang province topped the region with US$629 million, ranking the third nationwide. It was followed by Long An ($101.7 million), Can Tho ($28.25 million), Soc Trang ($15 million) and Tra Vinh ($10 million).

Tien Giang and Ben Tre stood at the bottom of the list with $5 million and $300,000 respectively.

The FDI attraction of 13 Mekong Delta localities now accounts for just 3 per cent of the country’s total, said a senior official from the Ministry of Planning, attributing this to weak infrastructure and traffic conditions. Costs for an enterprise to build a factory in the region are around 1.3 times higher than in other localities.

To improve the situation, the region held the 2nd Mekong Delta Economic Forum from May 31 to seek solutions and policies promoting regional economic development. (People’s Army)
