WB Funds US$31.7Mln for Vietnam's Traffic Safety

The World Bank has recently decided to finance US$31.73 million for Vietnam’s project to improve the country’s traffic safety on roads, the Hanoi municipal authorities’ website (www.ktdt.com.vn) reported.
 
The Vietnamese government will provide US$4.36 million in reciprocal capital for the project which is set to be completed in June 30, 2009.
 
Recently, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved to set up six sub-management units under the ministries of Transport, Police, Health and Education and Training to fulfill the specific tasks.
 
Among fastest growing economies in Asia, Vietnam saw 7,936 traffic accidents in the first half of this year, up 3.9 per cent on year, claiming 7,122 deaths and 6,000 injuries, 9.9 per cent, and 2 per cent on-year, respectively. 

Around 12,400 Vietnamese people were killed in traffic collisions in 2006, costing 3.9 per cent of the GDP, according to WB latest statistics. (Hanoinet, Vietnam Panorama)
