Vietnam shipped abroad 15.85 million tons of coal valued at more than US$1 billion in the first eight months this year, down 25.6 per cent on-year in volume but up 52.8 per cent in value, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

In August, the country exported 1.3 million tons of coal valued at US$143 million, down 49.9 per cent in volume and up 79.6 per cent in value compared with the same period last year.

In July, Vietnam shipped abroad 1.44 million tons of coal worth US$174 million, the office reported.

The country said it is gradually cutting coal exports in order to serve the increasing domestic demand.

Under Vietnam’s coal industry development strategy until 2015, a vision to 2025 approved by the prime minister recently, the nation is targeting to produce between 48 million and 50 million tons of clean coal by 2010.

The strategy also said the output will reach 60 million-65 million tons in 2015, 70 million-75 million in 2020 and 80 million tons in 2025. (GSO Aug 2008)
