Vietnam Ranks 1st in the World in Sugpo Prawn Export Value (Bai Thuy san DBSCL 01
Vietnam for the fourth time ranked first in the world in sugpo prawn export value with US$1.25 billion, according to latest statistics released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
In terms of volume, the country ranked the fourth with 131,615 tons, after Thailand, India and Indonesia.
The FAO’s statistics are usually some two years later than current year.
The FAO said Vietnam’s sugpo prawn output hit record in 2005 with more than 184,000 tons, but decreased to 131,000 tons in 2006.
Consecutive rise of sugpo prawn from US$5.96 to US$9.53/kilo was the major reason for the revenue increase, the FAO said, explaining that the higher price was attributed to the fact that Vietnamese companies exported large-sized shrimp.
The FAO’s statistics also showed that Vietnam was the world’s eighth biggest seafood exporter in 2006.
Sugpo prawn is a key seafood export item of Vietnam, but is now faced with competition from white-legged shrimp. (Vinanet)
