Socioeconomic development achievements coupled with health awareness and education has led to the improvement of health of the people in Ben Tre province. Special achievements in the health sector, most notably in the 2001-2008 period, include many innovations, creativities and strong cooperation with competent authorities and branches to execute its tasks.
Achievements
Ben Tre province is a leading province in developing its health sector which always focuses on building, consolidating and expanding its grassroots medical network. To date, all communes have independent medical stations and doctors and 97.50 per cent of communes have medical stations at village level. Ben Tre province also has 126 out of 160 communes, wards and towns reaching national medical standards, or 78.75 per cent, and 712 out of 905 villages and residential areas reaching healthcare culture standards, or 78.67 per cent.
The health sector also takes rigorous care of improving disease examination and treatment activities. In addition to continuously upgrading equipment and infrastructure for provincial and district-level general hospital network, Ben Tre province also invested in the building of two specialised hospitals, namely Ben Tre Tuberculosis Hospital and Ben Tre Mental Hospital. At present, the province has 178 medical establishments with 2,010 sick beds, averaging 14.66 beds per 10,000 residents (not counting sick beds of commune medical stations) and 4.57 doctors per 10,000 residents.
Modern scientific and technological advancements of consultation and treatment have been applied to expand and diversify better local services for the local people who now do not need to move to higher-tier hospitals for treatments.
Many international health cooperation projects have been implemented in Ben Tre province, including HIV/AIDS prevention, productive health care, rural healthcare, Mekong Delta health assistance, and Mekong sub-region contagious disease prevention.
Socialised health service
Socialisation is one of the major State policies to better health care services for the people. Thus, following the enactment of the Government’s Resolution 05/2005/NQ-CP and Ministry of Health’s Decision 2194/QD-BYT concerning the schemes to socialise, protect, care and improve public health, Ben Tre province has quickly followed suit. Based on the decisions of the Government and the Ministry of Health, the Ben Tre province’s People’s Committee has issued decisions to accelerate the socialisation of healthcare activities in the 2006-2010 period and has obtained important results.
The province also has gained many achievements in preventive medicine activities thanks to enthusiastic responses from the people. Many medical campaigns and activities are initially strengthened and developed to boost public healthcare. Major campaigns included health cultural village campaigns, nationally standardised health campaigns and humanitarian blood donation campaigns.
Private medical practice was developed in both quantity and quality, with many advancements. Arguably, the private health system in Ben Tre province has played a significant role in reducing the treatment load for public hospitals and improving health service in the province.
To advance service quality at public medical units, the health sector of Ben Tre province has outlined plans and orientations for future development. Accordingly, the sector will continue consolidating and perfecting the medical network in all aspects such as infrastructure, equipment and personnel, improving local health service quality to meet the primary healthcare demand of the people.
