Vietnam Food Association (VFA) has announced that domestic enterprises will be allowed to export 1.83 million tons of rice in the second half this year.

The Southern Food Corporation (Vinafood 2) is permitted to ship 520,000 tons of rice abroad, compared to 200,000 tons of Vinafood 1.

In terms of localities, Mekong Delta An Giang province will have highest rice export volume of 190,000 tons, followed by HCM City with 150,000 tons; Kien Giang 130,000 tons; Long An, Dong Thap, and Can Tho 100,000 tons each; Vinh Long 60,000 tons; Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, and Bac Lieu 30,000 tons each.

Since the beginning of the year, Vietnam has signed contracts to export nearly 4 million tons of rice, fulfilling 88 per cent of its yearly target. It prompted the VFA to consider proposing the government to increase this year’s rice export quota to 5.2 million tons.

The association also expects around 2 million tons of rice to be harvested in the summer-fall and fall-winter crops, after the recent abundant winter-spring crop.

Vietnam, the world’s second-largest rice exporter, earned about US$3 billion from exporting 4.7 million tons of rice last year. (Vietnam Economic Times)
