Vietnam expects to export at least 5.5 million tons of rice this year, 500,000 tons higher than the quota set by the government earlier, according to an official of the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).

Huynh Minh Hue, the VFA’s vice chairman, affirmed at an online meeting yesterday that the country is likely to export about two million tons of rice over the rest of 2009 after it shipped 3.65 million tons in the first half this year.

Domestic companies have so far this year gained contracts to sell more than five million tons of rice abroad, Hue said.

The association and local firms have quickly stockpiled summer-autumn rice for export for the rest of the year and early next year.

Provinces and cities across Vietnam have already harvested more than 18.6 million tons of un-husked rice from 3.1 million hectares planted for the winter-spring crop, up 312,000 tons against the same crop last year. (News)
